Stand up for what they believe in, even in the face of attacks by the right. There is a common misperception among the left that the country has moved to the right. The only thing that has moved to the right has been the discussion. Meanwhile, more and more people are staying out of the political process because they don’t think there are politicians that represent their views. The Democrats, the party that should be liberal has done exactly what Howard Dean accused them of becoming: Republican lite. In my experience phone banking, lately to the relative conservative California congressional district 50 the biggest complaint I get from young voters is there is no difference that they can see in the positions of the cnadidat4es. And they are right.
The largest pool of potential Democratic voters is in the unregistered. But if the message is so bland, so similar to that of the Republican Party, how can the Democrats expect young people to get involved? The right has spent decades honing their message but staying true to their beliefs of low taxes, strong defense and antiquity Christian values. The Democrats need to take a long term view, even though many of their beliefs feel immediate. A clean environment, energy self sufficiency, universal health care and civil rights for all will be just as important in 2020 as they are today. But if the party doesn’t take the long view, it will never achieve its goals in the near term.
